Umesh Patil

Umesh Patil’s painting is built on patience and close attention. Raised in Wada, Palghar, he was shaped early by the ritual visual culture of the Kunbi community and later by an extended apprenticeship alongside a practising calligrapher, an experience whose gestural traces remain legible in his painted surfaces. A graduate of L. S. Raheja School of Art, he builds his canvases through accumulated layers of acrylic, each coat modifying what lies beneath without erasing it, so that tone and chromatic depth accumulate beneath the final surface, sensed rather than seen. What appears as void in his work is never emptiness. It is a field of presence, charged with light and perceptual activity.
