Anu Kulkarni

Anu's canvases begin in landscape, yet they arrive before us as states of perception. The land in her work is not given through horizon, habitation or recognisable contour. It is held in colour, in the drift of light, in the slow settling of atmosphere upon the painted surface. Working in oil with knives and rollers, she builds soft planes that seem to breathe with an inward stillness. Water, sky, earth and distance appear as intimations rather than description. Each canvas unfolds gradually, inviting a manner of looking that is unhurried and attentive. What remains is the quiet force of nature felt through colour, movement and silence.
